Eazy-E's Widow & Son Battle In Court Over Ruthless Records Trademark

The late Eazy-E's family is battling it out in court. According to Billboard, Eazy's widow, Tomica Woods-Wright, filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the rapper's son, Eric Darnel Wright (aka Lil Eazy-E), as well as Arnold E. White (Bigg A)

Let's break it down. Woods-Wright is the owner of Compton Records, which does business as Ruthless Records. Her suit claims that the defendants have been infringing on the Ruthless Records trademark by running www.ruthlessrecordsinc.com for over a year. The website not only uses the Ruthless name, but it also sells merchandise with the word "Ruthless" on items.

Moreover, the site reads: "Founded by legendary gangsta rap artist Eazy-E, Ruthless Records Inc. is a globally recognized brand, developing music and marketing in a whole new way. Our old-school outlook mixed with cutting edge technology makes Ruthless Records Inc. a leader in the music business. Eazy-E’s first-born son and longtime friend are carrying on the legacy that started it all. With Eric LIL Eazy-E Wright Jr as President, Ruthless Records Inc. is on a mission to bring music back to life in a whole new way for a whole new era."

Woods-Wright's legal documents add that the defendants have previously attempted to trademark Ruthless Records. But, their application was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Billboard reports: "While the suit doesn't set forth specific monetary damages, it calls on the defendants to pay punitive and statutory damages, costs of suit and attorneys fees and 'further relief as the Court may deem just and appropriate.'"
