I woke up this morning to the news that the late, great, legendary John Witherspoon had passed away at the age of 77. I immediately began looking for the pic that Scoob and I took with him after one of his shows many years ago at Zanies. Luckily, I found it and although my memory is normally trash, I remember the story behind the pic.
It had to be 2002 and Scoob and I were still fairly new to Nashville, yet, felt we were somewhat of a "big deal" at the time. If I'm not mistaken, John Witherspoon came to the station the day before for an interview on the afternoon show, but Scoob and I missed him as our timeslot at the time was 7pm to Midnight. The next night, we went to his show, laughed our asses off and decided to introduce ourselves afterwards.
Let me tell you something, John Witherspoon was a HUSTLER! Despite his fame and success as a comedian and actor, he was still selling t-shirts and charging people after the show to take a Polaroid pic with him. The pics ran $20 each, but Scoob and I weren't worried about that because we were, ahem, Dolewite and Scooby from 1011 The Beat! We stepped up, introduced ourselves and fully expected him to waive his $20 fee. He was as nice as he could be, told us it was nice to meet us, and charged us every cent of that $20!
RIP John Witherspoon!
