Black CNN reporter and camera crew arrested live in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WZTV) —A CNN reporter and his camera crew were arrested while covering the protests and unrest in Minneapolis early Friday.

CNN reporter Omar Jimenez was with producer Bill Kirkos and photojournalist Leonel Mendez reporting on the ongoing protests over the death of George Floyd when state police took them into custody.

CNN said the crew identified themselves as press, but the police continued to take the crew in custody.

The move led to condemnation from CNN, and network president Jeff Zucker spoke to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who apologized for the the actions of the state police.

Police said the crew was arrested because they were told to move but stayed at their location. However in the footage, Jiminez is heard saying they'll go wherever police want them to, adding "we’re getting out of your way when you were advancing through the intersection. Let us know and we’ve got you.”
