Van Lathan was interviewed by VladTV when the subject of his infamous moment in the TMZ newsroom with Kanye West came up. Lathan said Kanye’s “Slavery is a choice” comment was just one of many outlandish comments made at the time. Although Lathan called Kanye a “transcendent talent” and a “visionary creator” he says Kanye “doesn’t want free speech.” “Kanye talks about free speech, right? He talks about the fact that he should be able to say whatever he wants to say, and that’s true,” said Lathan. “But he doesn’t seem to like other people’s free speech very much… Kanye doesn’t want free speech. What he actually wants is white speech.” Van defines “white speech” as “saying whatever you want to say and there being absolutely zero repercussions for you saying it.”
