Today marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, and the city has yet to give him his due..until last night! The Nashville Metro Council has taken action to rename part of Charlotte Ave, a major downtown st., after the iconic civil rights leader.
The part of Charlotte Ave. that stretches from 3rd Ave. & I40 has been re-born, and will soon officially be Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Blvd.! The rest of Charlotte Ave. will remain untouched.
"For far too long the city has not given him his due," Mayor Briley told onlookers prior to signing the document. The crowd also included Fisk University alumni and leadership and members of Alpha Phi Alpha, King's fraternity.
This change will not take effect until November 7th.
